Anticipating New Technologies

September 5, 2010 |20:41 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Given the breakneck speeds at which technology moves, the information technology sector must keep an eye toward the horizon in order to be able to take advantage of new state-of-the-art tools that come along. Of course, this does not mean that an enterprise must run out and implement the latest platform or operating system just for the sake of having the latest technology. It's more than just saying, "We need the latest version of Windows Server." I.T. must weigh the risks and benefits of new technologies and how it fits into their existing systems. They must learn what to expect from new technology and how it will fit into the current business strategy. This goes into understanding technology trends so an enterprise does not invest heavily into a system that will quickly become obsolete or incompatible with a firm's existing systems. This situation is similar to the experience of many consumers who purchased the beta format for VCRs, only to find out that the VHS format had become the standard a short time after. These consumers were left with obsolete and useless equipment which were incompatible with the current standard of the time. Learning the technology trends is essential for businesses when considering a new technology.

Microsoft Shows Off New Technologies at Faculty Summit

May 26, 2010 |11:02 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Another fun demonstration consists of six vertical tubes back lit to look like lava lamps. Valves at the bottom of the tubes release bubbles and can be programmed to send up bubbles across the tubes that take the shapes of letters. One of the device's creators, Andrew Malota from the University of Texas A&M, envisions it could be used in a bar to advertise drink specials and generally contribute to the ambiance.

Sphere is a multi-touchscreen,similar to Microsoft's Surface computer, but it is round. Microsoft envisions that it could be used in a collaborative public environment, like a hotel lobby. "There is no master-user position," said Hrvoje Banko, a Microsoft researcher who showed off the Sphere at the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit in Redmond, Washington, on Tuesday.

Hey Apple: Wanna Sell 7 to 8 Million More iPhones? Add Verizon

May 25, 2010 |11:19 | New Technologies  By : Team X

We keep hearing rumor after rumor that Apple will be expanding its offering of iPhone service providers to include Verizon. But both companies stubbornly refuse to comment. Indeed, there have also been recent developments that cast doubt on a potential Apple-Verizon alliance. A few examples include Apple using AT&T for iPad data and Verizon's anti-iPhone commercials. A survey by an analyst at Morgan Stanley, however, indicates that Apple would be smart to bring Verizon on board.

Bizjournals.com reports that the analyst, Katy Huberty, found nearly 17% of Verizon customers would switch to an iPhone if given the opportunity. And the number might have been even higher than that if Apple hadn't allowed some Verizon customers to become content with Android-based devices. This is a huge segment consumers who lie out of Apple's reach entirely due to its exclusivity contract with AT&T.

Another Video Chat Clue for Apple's Rumored June iPhone

May 24, 2010 |10:41 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Video chat on the iPhone? The on-again, off-again rumor that Apple's latest incarnation of iPhones is going to support two-way video conferencing has been the talk of the Web town as of late.

PCMag's own Sascha Segan doesn't foresee this happening: "Apple is very picky about its multimedia experiences, and video chat with mobile devices over cellular networks doesn't work well," he writes. "At CTIA, the CEO of Skype said the problems are network-centric as much as device-centric. Apple would rather leave a feature out than deliver a subpar experience.

Microsoft Aims to Get Back in the Game in Mobile

February 12, 2010 |13:16 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Just a few years ago, Microsoft (MSFT) looked like a real contender in the mobile-phone market. Its Windows Mobile operating system ran about a quarter of all smartphones as recently as 2004, and it was gaining ground on leaders like Nokia (NOK).

Then Apple (AAPL) and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIMM) left the software giant in the dust. On Feb. 15, at a wireless industry conference in Barcelona, Microsoft will unveil its latest effort to get back into the game. The renamed Windows Phone operating system will "move the bar forward, not in an evolutionary way," promises Robert J. Bach, president of the company's entertainment and devices division.

Microsoft needs to be a player in the smartphone market. The computing people used to do on personal computers, where Microsoft has a lock, is migrating to mobile devices. Apple's iPhone, RIM's Blackberry, and other phones are becoming the preferred way to read e-mail, check out Facebook, or catch up on the news.

Researcher IDC predicts the total shipments of smartphones will more than double between 2009 and 2013, to 391.3 million units. Microsoft's new mobile software "has to be different and convince their customers and partners that they are going to fundamentally change direction," says IDC analyst William Stofega.

February 2, 2010 |14:00 | It News | New Technologies  By : Team X

Yes! The Fox has found another prey in the N900. The long awaited mobile version of Firefox, which had been code-named Fennec has been released. Unfortunately, for now the release is available only for the Maemo OS and will run.

On the N900, N820 and N800 Nokia devices. While the browser will finally be available for the Windows mobile platform as well (an alpha is available now) there are no plans for porting it to some of the other smartphone operating systems such as Symbian.

Undoubtedly no version for Firefox for iPhone is planned, however a Blackberry port for Firefox is also difficult due to its Java-based OS. Android users however might see a Firefox version as such versions are undergoing testing and development.

Review - Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter

February 1, 2010 |12:47 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Review - Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking AdapterThere’s no getting around it: Microsoft’s original Xbox 360 wireless adapter was a colossal piece of crap and a complete waste of money. It was extremely expensive at $100, and on the off occasion it would actually hold a connection it was unreliable.

Instability led to terrible latency issues that hindered high-def streaming and made multiplayer gaming problematic. It seems that even Microsoft is aware of the issues, because the publishing giant has decided to replace the hundred dollar paperweight with the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter. In a stunning turn of events, the N Adapter is not only improved, but completely worth the price.

It’s a shame that wireless access to Xbox Live still costs an extra 100 bones, especially when the Wii and PlayStation 3 have had it integrated since day one at no additional cost.
