Anticipating New Technologies

September 5, 2010 |20:41 | New Technologies  By : Team X

Given the breakneck speeds at which technology moves, the information technology sector must keep an eye toward the horizon in order to be able to take advantage of new state-of-the-art tools that come along. Of course, this does not mean that an enterprise must run out and implement the latest platform or operating system just for the sake of having the latest technology. It's more than just saying, "We need the latest version of Windows Server." I.T. must weigh the risks and benefits of new technologies and how it fits into their existing systems. They must learn what to expect from new technology and how it will fit into the current business strategy. This goes into understanding technology trends so an enterprise does not invest heavily into a system that will quickly become obsolete or incompatible with a firm's existing systems. This situation is similar to the experience of many consumers who purchased the beta format for VCRs, only to find out that the VHS format had become the standard a short time after. These consumers were left with obsolete and useless equipment which were incompatible with the current standard of the time. Learning the technology trends is essential for businesses when considering a new technology.

Microsoft Quashed Effort to Boost Online Privacy

August 2, 2010 |13:43 | It Gossips  By : Team X

The online habits of most people who use the world's dominant Web browser are an open book to advertisers. That wasn't the plan at first. In early 2008, Microsoft Corp.'s product planners for the Internet Explorer 8.0 browser intended to give users a simple, effective way to avoid being tracked online. They wanted to design the software to automatically thwart common tracking tools, unless a user deliberately switched to settings affording less privacy.

That triggered heated debate inside Microsoft. As the leading maker of Web browsers, the gateway software to the Internet, Microsoft must balance conflicting interests: helping people surf the Web with its browser to keep their mouse clicks private, and helping advertisers who want to see those clicks. In the end, the product planners lost a key part of the debate.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has pledged to donate the majority of his $13.5 billion fortune to charity. Allen's pledge came just weeks after his former business partner, Bill Gates, and legendary investor Warren Buffet both called on other billionaires to commit to giving away at least half their fortunes. "I want to announce that my philanthropic efforts will continue after my lifetime," said Allen, who has already given about $1 billion to charity over the years.

Its YouTube website specifically for mobile phones as the company continues its push into handheld Internet market. In a blog post, the Mountain View, Calif., company said the update will make YouTube friendlier for touch devices, such as Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone and smartphones running the company's own fast-growing Android operating system, such as Motorola Inc.'s (MOT) Droid X. Google also said the site will incorporate social features such as the ability to "like" a video.

The move comes as sales of smartphones have exploded, creating demand for mobile-oriented websites to deliver content over strained and slower cellular networks. Google said demand from mobile devices more than doubled in 2009 from the previous year and that its YouTube Mobile site currently serves more than 100 million videos per day. YouTube is currently the third-most-popular site on the Internet, according to industry tracker Alexa Internet, Inc. Google shares slid to $449.50 in after-hours trading after closing up 3.2% to $450.20.

Microsoft Kinect Marketing Material Leaks

July 6, 2010 |12:50 | It Gossips  By : Team X

The folks over at Kotaku  managed to get their hands on some marketing material for Kinect, the motion-sensing camera/controller for the Xbox 360. There’s a lot of purple going on in these images and a clear lack of a price tag so it won’t offer any more information than we already know.

However, from the looks of the novel boxes, a game may not be included with the camera. It does indicate that a bundle will exist that includes the new Xbox 360 250GB model with the camera, which I would guess at around $399. You can check out another shot after the break.
