Sony Corp. said Thursday it has developed a new kind of "augmented reality" technology that shows additional information when it captures images through a camera on devices such as a smartphone.
Additional information that will appear on the device's screen to realize a more powerful expression includes virtual objects" which are "images and texts that cannot be identified by visual perception alone," Sony said.
The technology called "Smart AR" employs a "markerless approach," making it possible for it to be used without special markers such as barcodes, the company added. Sony will carry out experiments with the aim to make the new technology applicable to games and advertisements.
