Living up to the long-arm-of-the-law tag , the state police are likely to introduce a hi-end technology that will track down a wanted criminal in any part of the state. Senior serving and retired police officials seem to be impressed with the new Wanted Accused Search System, a software that sends out a signal to the central control room , which in turn sends messages to all police stations in the state, once a criminal atlargeisheld in any corner of the state for any other crime.
Superintendent of police (highways ) B G Shekhar last week presented the details of the technology at the Centre for Police Research in Pune that was attendedby stateCIDchief Ashok Dhiware and retired IPS officials A V Krishnan and Jayant Umranikar among others.
"The central control room will have the data about criminals at large. If a man wanted for a murder in Borivli is caught in Satara for theft, the police there will inform the control room about the arrest. As soon as the control room officials type the name of the arrested on the system, the software will alert them that the Borivli police were looking for him. The control room will call Borivli cops and the criminal will be taken into custody of the authorities concerned," an official said. Former DGP Krishnan, also the chairman of the research centre , said , "The system of tracking wanted accused always existed. So far, it used to be done manually , but now the new technology will help in the enhancement of the functioning of the police department." Shekhar declined to divulge the details of the project. "If seniors are convinced, a presentation will be held before home minister," he said.
