PC Magazine Article Archive: Enjoy Classic Articles from Our Archives

Ever feel nostalgic for some old technology from your past? My very first computer was a Timex Sinclair that I upgraded to 16K of memory. I fondly remember pushing on that flat-keyed keyboard. It's kind of fun to think about past computers and devices; it's even more fun to read about them.

We've collected a majority of the PC Magazine articles from 1992 to 1999 and created a utility that enables you to search for some of the gems from that period. Take this one from Dvorak's Inside Track column from 1992:

"Microsoft Corp. has shipped MS-DOS 6.0 to beta testers. DOS 6.0 is not going to see any major code changes, say observers, but will include a slew of new utilities, such as built-in antivirus scanning, disk defragmenting, elaborate backup systems, and data compression! The makers of utility software are grousing that this will put them out of business. DOS 6.0 is scheduled to ship in early 1993. Bankruptcy filings will appear elsewhere shortly thereafter."

The more things change, the more they stay the same.Or how about this snippet from Christopher Barr's story about the Apple Newton:

"More than a year after Apple's chairman, John Sculley, added the term Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to the lexicon of computing, the Apple Newton MessagePad has arrived. The Newton is Apple's first PDA, and was developed in conjunction with Sharp Electronics Corp. Sharp is selling a version called ExpertPad."

I didn't even know Sharp had anything to do with the Newton, and I don't remember the ExpertPad.You could spend hours looking up fun facts and reminiscing about products gone by.As soon as you run the Article Archive you will notice that the utility comes with articles published from 1992. We did this in order to keep the initial download small. To grab the other years simply go to the Import database button and select the other years you would like to have. It'll take a little time to download everything but you can continue to use the program while it does this. Note: The final size of the database on your hard drive will be about 200MB so make sure that you have the space on your primary drive before importing.

All of the articles are listed with the magazine volume and issue numbers, the date it was published, the author, and title. Clicking on an article displays the abstract for that article. You can search for articles by using the search box at the top right of the application, or you can use the filter criteria on the left. Using the filters, you can search within specific fields: Volume, Issue, Date, Author, Title, Abstract, and Full Text.

You can also choose to group articles by Volume, Volume and Issue, Author, and Date. In the screenshot below, you can see how the article list will look when grouped by Volume and Issue. When you find an article that you'd like to reference in the future, you can bookmark it. Simply hit the bookmark toolbar button or right-click on an article and select Toggle bookmark. You can easily find all of your bookmarked articles by selecting the Show only bookmarked box in the filter area.Once you find an article you'd like to read, you can select it and hit the Selected article tab or you can double-click on an article.

The utility makes reading articles on your computer very easy on your eyes. You can enlarge or shrink the font by simply moving the slider right or left.
To the left of the font slider are the page view selectors. You can view the article in Page Mode, Two Page Mode, or Scroll Mode. Scroll Mode is similar to a Web browser—scroll down the page as you read. Page Mode presents the article in pages that you click through using the paging buttons at the bottom. Two Page Mode is similar in that it uses paging, but it surrounds the pages with a border.

You can search for specific text within an article by clicking the magnifying glass at the bottom of the article. When it's clicked a text box will appear and you can enter your search term. Hit the Enter key or the right arrow button to find the next occurrence of that word.
