It's new technology one Metro police agency believes will help catch drunk drivers, vehicles with abducted children & stolen cars. Out of the 106 stolen car reports officers in Midwest City have taken this year, they believe this could help nab thieves. Lt. Jonathan Goforth, Midwest City Police Department, said, "We'll catch more criminals I think. It's another pair of eyes for us to look for that vehicle.
The new gadget scans license plates as the officer drives by, automatically checking it against wanted tag numbers. Cameras, mounted on the patrol car, scan license plates as the officer cruises by. It then checks it against the database "hot list" - a registry of all the wanted vehicles out there. The license plate scanner costs about $20,000. The department is testing it out to see if it's something they want to spend some grant money on.
